How the Ledger Is Kept

FableFjorRhythmFox is a register, not a highlights reel. Each moment is filed like an archive record, so you can check the context before you argue about it.

The entry format

Every moment in the register carries the same fields: date, venue and city, competition and stage, final score, the minute of the moment, and three short blocks labelled Before, The moment and After. The format is deliberate. The famous clip almost always starts too late and ends too early; the before-and-after blocks restore what it cuts.

Sources we check

We cross-reference official match reports and records published by FIFA, UEFA and national associations, contemporary newspaper coverage, and full-match broadcast footage where it survives. Where official attendance figures and popular estimates differ, as with the Maracanã in 1950, we log the official number and note the estimate.

Disputed facts

Some questions do not have settled answers. Whether Geoff Hurst's shot crossed the line in 1966 is one. In those cases we log the decision as it was made and mark the dispute as unresolved rather than picking a side. Timestamps such as Agüero's 93:20 are recorded as the widely cited figure, with a note when broadcast and stadium clocks differ.

Corrections

If you find an error, use the contact tool to draft an entry with your source and email it to us. Confirmed corrections are applied to the page and noted in our internal change log.
